Pubish object really slow

Hi In my application I send a serializable small object using a RMI JMS server and publish/subscribe paradigm. I have the problem that using two computers connected directly (via wireless), the delay from the "send" call and when the other computer receives the message is realy big, even almost a second. I have seen benchmarks that talks about 600 messages a second or similar, so I would appreciate if someone could point out what could be slowing so much the communication.
