Why no digits allowed in property name?

I tried to use the UML uuid as a message property name
where the uuid looks something like
00000-00abc00-42000034
I therefor prefixed it with a capital 'U'.
However openJMS is throwing an exception that this is
an invalid name. Reading the JMS javadoc for Message
it states:

An identifier is an unlimited-length sequence of
letters and digits, the first of which must be a
letter. A letter is any character for which the method
Character.isJavaLetter returns true. This includes '_'
and '$'. A letter or digit is any character for which
the method Character.isJavaLetterOrDigit returns true.

So why is above name rejected?
