However, as the author I do not really recommend it, as it heavily uses JSPs and JSPs are just awful technology.  It evolved, I was pressured, ...

A better approach is SimpleServlets.  Can be used in two modes, plain procedures or an object model.  Not very developed, but a sound design based on experience, and very easy to work with an extend as necessary.  No XML, of course.
