Operation not supported: join() on local databases

Hello.
I've tried to follow the test.tx example. So I created a new external 
transaction and passed to the thread constructor. When the run() method 
is called I do a tx.join() then I get the error "Operation not 
supported: join() on local databases".

So how can I join an existing transaction using a database in the same JVM ?

Every path I take it seems to lead me into a dead end.
