Thanks for your response.  I've found the problem and am embarrassed to
report that is had nothing to do with what I described - what I described
was just gobbledygook!  The problem was a simple (but hard to spot mistake
on my part).  It was just that I'd recently upgrade to 1.2, and wondered
if it was something to do with that.  Which it wasn't.
