I would say not only,  but there has to be clearly
defined boundary.  And this boundary could be
somehow permeable, so some infrasturcture services may
be offered by server.

While I understand your intention,  there is at least
one legitimate use case:
Hiebrnate session factory resides ( typically ) on 
application level, while hibernate session is typicaly
shortliving and scoped on the "request" ->  "sesion"
tier is in between.
