I seem to remember Klaus referring to an old paper from telecom or a video game or something. I can't find a citation at the moment. There are a couple of Google research papers about a distributed C++ prevalent system in use here: http://research.google.com/archive/chubby-osdi06.pdf http://research.google.com/archive/paxos_made_live.pdf They don't use the term "prevalence," but they do say e.g. "we have written a simple database using write ahead logging and snapshotting." That's probably an important factor in finding research. The term "prevalence" isn't used as often as it could be, but there are plenty of implementations of "write ahead logging and snapshotting." I'd bet there's quite a bit of research out there if you broaden your search to include such phrases (plus "journaling," etc.).
