The problem is the Factory is in a separate project because it depends
on XStream.

I say we remove the dependency from the Factory to XStream, move the
Factory to the core and simply provide the XStreamSerializer in our
xstream project, clearly documenting how to use it with the factory:

   factory.configureSnapshotSerializer(new XStreamSerializer());

Thats it.
