Hi, Yeah. Good point. If maintenance of scarab is done in eclipse (or similar) ensuring sources are in UTF-8 is not a problem regardless of platform. However, if not then you are pretty much relying on good nature to ensure the character set is maintained by the developer who edits the file and the quality of the tools used. UTF8 really is the only character set that is truly universal and will ensure the comments and other strings are as intended - I personally opt for UTF-8 sources, but ASCII is probably more compatible across UTF8 and cp1252 etc, although I suspect ASCII would result in more of the same.
