I got another use case during a small talk with one of my co workers 
from a production environment, to give more examples about this feature:

You have on project, wich has version numbers from 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 
and up... later on you get a sub module, which has version numbers from 
1.0.0.0, 1.0.0.1 and up. By this feature you can easily map 1.0 and 
1.0.0.0, without any need to edit the parent module attribute options, 
which the user of the parent module may does not want. A question of the 
situation you have to face I think.
