Sure i can understand this.
I noticed it only recently in trunk and am surprised if it's present in 
the 0.21 release. 
(I also had problems with non-ascii charaters getting garbled relating 
more to not having a UTF-8 locale enabled).

It definitely isn't behaviour we want.
But then java's handling isn't perfect either, with most frameworks 
adding extra support.

Otherwise i'm not sure what the problem is. Have you anything else to 
offer from the logs?
