I have managed to reduce the performance impact quite a bit. The gabriel
benchmarks now run only 50% slower, compared to 200% previously.

Part of that is due to the stack tracer now being able to cope with
optimistic optimisation without having to revert it.

With these improvements it may actually be feasible to have the stack
tracer enabled by default, with only performance critical applications
ever having to turn it off.
