Initial Comment:
The tests in tests/safe-for-space.scm all run out of memory after a few minutes. That is not supposed to happen - all but one (ex4) are meant to work.

I have tried this with CVS HEAD and a) JDK 1.4.2, b) JDK 1.5, with and without the -server option.
