Initial Comment:
It would be nice to have some easy way of profiling
Scheme code, collecting information about call counts
and execution times.

I envisage something along the lines of the current
tracing facilities, perhaps even combined with it, plus
two additional functions: one to extract the collected
profiling information in some sensible form, and one to
clear the profiling information.

This shouldn't take more than a few hours to implement.

There is one difficulty: getting accurate timing. The
JDK s <1.5 only supports millisecond resolution. JDK1.5
has System.nanoTime(). Since we want to be 1.3
compatible, we could write the code in a way that uses
nanosecond timing when System.nanoTime() is available,
and millisecond timing otherwise.

Also, ideally we'd want to get CPU time rather than
elapsed time, but that is hard.
