Usually it is a result of protection, but if the methods are public as 
you say, it could be that the name of the method differs from what you 
are passing to generic-java-method.  Can you post some snippets of your 
Scheme code and the method signatures in Java? 

Check for case sensitivity possibilities as well.  For example:

; Won't work, since the symbol is lower cased
(generic-java-method 'toString) 

; instead...
(generic-java-method '|toString|)
