yes, the path and the variable show up in set, and I can cd to $SISC_HOME.

Just to be sure, should I be setting SISC_HOME in my .bashrc or as a
windows environment variable?  THe definition in my .bashrc looks like

export SISC_HOME=/cygdrive/c/PROGRA~1/sisc-1.16.5
