Most of the time for these operations is spent in syntax expansion.  In 
the future, we'll be adopting a different syntax expander than psyntax 
which should hopefully improve this and other issues.  But its not on 
the immediate task list.

You could turn off the optimizer, by doing:

(current-optimizer (lambda (x) x))

But I don't know that it will make a noticable difference.
