large db + jdbctemplate + jboss = out of heap space (too easily)

hi,
i just started bug fixing this java web application that uses:
- spring mvc
- spring jdbc template (for data access)
and runs on jboss 5.1.

some db tables have gotten bigger and bigger (users table now contains more
than 400 thousands rows!) so what happens is that very often we're getting
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError when queries try to fetch too many rows.

we HAVE to fix this but we're not thinkig of changing data access strategy.
anybody can help?

is it just jboss configuration or we've got to dig into the code for some
major optimization?
