DropDownMenuDisplayer always closes menus

I'm trying to use the DropDownMenuDisplayer to display my menu. It displays and works OK, calling the appropriate actions when I click on items. The problem is that most of my pages have the same menus, but whenever I navigate to a new page it collapses the menus previously opened. I would like it to retain the state - is this possible? Ideally it would retain the entire state of all open menus items, but I would happy if it could just retain open the single menu from which the item was clicked.
