I have leveraged the three main methods of role based development. 1: The web.xml is set to control role-permissions 2: The policy file locks all files accept where explicitly allowed 3: Use class code to getRemoteUser and getPrinciple While these are all great to use, none of them work until you know what the Role/User/Principle are. So: Use a ServletFilter to catch all transactions and get & verify the user authenticity. This way you can write your authcode once and then set the filter chain in the web.xml to filter all requests for the application :) If you are in a non-single signon environment, then you can have the user login and authenticate then pass the objectId of the authenticaiton|principle as a JDOM element to be transformed into a hidden form element. (note encrypt the ID with some sequencer each time so people can not acquire the objectId in a simple pass, even though the objectId will only be good for the session) Your navigation menu problem can be handled in several ways: Quick and easy: Create and transform it seperately from the the StrutsCX two stage xml tranformation(Fowler:PEAA), then use a Servlet2.0 Filter to add it to the response just before sending it to the requester. (hint: use a $NavigationPlaceHolder variable and replace it with a string...) Paul S. Here is the basic problem "The user is slow, the machine is fast and memory realistate is expensive." This analogy works like this: A user has a large object in memory on the session, the user takes for ever (10seconds--10000ms) to do something with it. Ok this does not seem bad, now add 10,000 users/minute and you have a 5minute timeout on the session.... say a 50kB object in memory... 5*10kB*50k= 2.5GB of memory.(only 500MB of memory if you account for rolloff) In addition when one scales this in a clustered environment the session state must be mirrored to each cluster node so each node adds linearly to the session memory... so with 10 machines handling 1000users/minute each we wind up with the 2.5GB peak memory and 500MB avg memory on each machine in the 10 node cluster. There are several activities working on a solution to this problem. A solid one is JCache which is a distributable/clusterable Caching mechanism. Also look at the whitepapers of your HttpEngine to find out how it handles the session state problem. In the mean time JCache is what I use. Good luck all, Paul S.
