J2EE Connector Architecture (or simply Connectors) primarily defines the pluggability contracts (SPI) for a J2EE Container. The Connector specification also defines an optional CCI that can be used by applications. The CCI is just one kind of API that a resource adapter can expose to the application. It is possible for a resource adapter to use non-CCI APIs to the application as well. For example, with Connector 1.5, it is now possible to plug-in a JMS provider into a J2EE Container using a resource adapter. The application would use JMS specific APIs to send and receive messages. Another example is JDBC. It is possible to implement a JDBC resource adapter (based on Connector contracts), and plug it into a J2EE Container. Such a resource adapter would expose JDBC API to the applications. Thus, Connectors serve as the pluggability point for integrating external systems / resources into a J2EE Container. Such a Connector can expose any API to the applications, in spite of CCI.
