I think e.g. the Connection pooling managed by the container could be one.

Exactly. Why wouldn I use an JCA adapter to connect to rdb when there is
JDBC. Are there reasons for people to use JCA adapters to connect to
relational db's ?

Note that connectivity to databases is generally accomplished in J2EE
via JDBC. You wouldn't use a Connector for direct communication with a
database, typically (the Sun JDBC Connector only does this for
illustrative purposes). Longer run it is likely we will see convergence
between the Connector Architecture and JDBC, as they are already similar
in many ways. But for right now, JDBC is the way to go for databases.
