Proxy Use

Can someone elighten me about Proxy use when lazy loading data.

For instance, if the client called a method (getRelatedObject()) on a Transfer Object (aka Value Object) then it would retrieve the related object. 

So how have you all out there done this?

Is it acceptable to proxy an ebj and allow clients to get data, via the proxy or is there a better design??
