<a name="welcome"><h2>Half Full</h2></a>
<P>Hi all! I'm writing to you from the floor of the Moscone Center
in San Francisco, in the middle of a bustling 2005 JavaOne Conference.
As always, it's been a very busy week, and sleep deprivation is
starting to get the better of me. BUT, we're at the half-way
mark, and what better way of sharing some thoughts then in our
monthly Community Newsletter.
<P>
<b>News and information from around the Jini Community...</b>
<P>
We've got a lot packed into this June Newsletter. Beyond the "Jini@JavaOne"
update, the core of this edition is based on the featured
article "Jini Technology Introduction, Part Two" from Phil Bishop in
the Design Corner. Add in some Happenings, Jini.org project info, JDP News,
a reprise in "Classic Jini Community"... and we're off.
<P>
Be cool.

<P>
This month's Design Corner column continues the introductory series by
Phil Bishop (<a href="http://www.incax.com">Inca X</a>) with <b>"Jini Technology
Introduction, Part Two"</b>. The article focuses on leasing, and will really
help developers new to Jini technology understand this critical piece of
the Jini architecture.
<P>
Here is an excerpt:
<p>
<blockquote>
<i>
If you are new to Jini technology then the concept of leases might seem very
strange at first, but once you get a basic understanding about why leases are
used and the problems they solve, you'll probably wish that you knew about
the concepts years ago when you were writing other types of distributed systems.
<p>
. . .
<P>
Leasing resources solves many of the problems that software developers have been
grappling with for years, such as how does a server application know if a client,
which has locked a resource (and hasn't returned it), has crashed or whether the
client is still using the resource? Does the server ping the client to see if
it's alive? If it is contactable, how does the server know that the client
hasn't failed in some respect?
</i>

<P>
Overall, this year's JavaOne conference has a good crowd
(seems like more than last year - I've heard estimates
of around 12-14,000), and a good energy through it. People around
the conference and in the Pavillion seem a little more enthused
than last year. There is a big celebration around "Java's 10th
Birthday!" (including singing "Happy Birthday (to Java)" at a keynote - which
felt a little odd - but maybe it's just me).
<P>
To give you a buzzword bingo of what seems to be the talk of the
conference: Community, SOA, JBI, Grid, POJO, Ruby, Blu-ray, Eclipse,
and NetBeans, etc.
<P>
Sun announced open sourcing of their app server which is in the
<a href="https://glassfish.dev.java.net/">glassfish</a> project
on Java.net. This has certainly gained some visibility.
Web Services and J2EE continue to march on. SOA has a lot of
attention this year, with a strong connection to
Java Business Integration (JBI), which is being worked through
the Java Community Process (JCP) in JSR two hundred and mumble,
mumble.
<P>
The (Scott McNealy) Keynote on Day 2 touched on healthcare and
education. The Brazilian healthcare system (which was developed
using Java) and the Java.net Global Education and Learning (GELC)
efforts were highlighted. The end of the Keynote featured the
presentation of <a href="http://java.sun.com/javaone/sf/dukes_choice_awards.jsp">
"Duke Awards"</a>, and... we were very pleased to see GigaSpaces
and GE Healthcare Products win Dukies in the Emerging Technology
category for their great work, including use of Jini technology.
Very cool. Congratulations!
<P>
As for Jini presence.. it's certainly less than in previous years.
It has been great running into developers in the Jini Community all
over the conference, but most have asked why there are not
more Jini sessions. There's also been an allergic reaction to the
view being pushed around SOA (and JBI) -- as they've asked,
"Where is Jini, the "original SOA", in that view of service oriented
architectures?". Good questions, and I appreciate the passion
in the conversation.
<P>
The Jini sessions and BoFs have been great so far, including:
<ul>
<li>TS-1915: Formula 1 and Jini/Rio Dynamic Network Architecture<br>
As you might expect in a race environment.. the challenges of
unreliable networks and fast changing environments is very real.
The talk highlighted their use of Jini and Rio to deliver a
highly scalable, available, and flexible system -- which is
currently deployed on the F1 racing circuit.</li>
<li>BOF-9041: ITSIBUS: Jini and RFID Technologies Enable Interoperability
in an Open, Service-Oriented Architecture for Toll Management<br>
This is a toll management system that is being deployed in Portugal
(currently, about 20% of toll booths deployed, looking to go
to 100% by the end of the year) that has used Jini as a major
infrastructure in the system. All of the services in the system are
Jini services including the device adaptors. The features they needed
in the system included: interoperability, modularity, multi vendor,
monitoring, plug-n-play, and security. It was interesting to hear
about the things that make up this kind of system, including:
vehicle detection, license plate recognition, etc.</li>
<li>BOF-9610: Building Tomorrow's Grid<br>
This was a very interesting BOF, including Richard Nicholson (Paremus),
Dan Hushon (Sun GRID), and representatives from Oracle and a
small company (Arjuna) in a panel. I think it was intended to be a
generic panel discussion on Grids in general... but right off the bat,
Jini was placed front and center. Richard and Dan did a fantastic
job highlighting Jini and JavaSpaces natural fit in building Grid's.</li>
<li>BOF-9203: Jini Evolution: Creating a Massive Cluster for Risk-Management
Calculations<br>
Jens Kleeman from KTB described using Jini to transform a once hard-to-manage
collection of statically linked clusters to a pool of resources
to perform risk-management calculations. I heard (unfortunately, I couldn't
be in two places at once) that Jens was funny and insightful - and that
this was a great BoF.</li>
<li>BOF-9533: Sun Java System RFID Software<br>
This BoF included a discussion on the Sun RFID product, and how it
uses Jini and Rio technologies to enable a distributed systems architecture
to provide highly available, scalable, and reliable systems for the collection
of data from RFID tags and other sensors at the edge.</li>
</ul>
<P>
We had the big "Communities in Action" event last night. This is a gathering of a
number of Java communities, including Jini.org, Java.net, JCP, NetBeans, JXTA, etc.
Estimated attendance was greater than 500 (I'm bad at those kinds of things,
but it seemed plausible). We had a number of interested folks come by to chat,
and we were handing out our <a href="http://www.jini.org/whitepapers/JINI_ComputeGrid_WP_FINAL.pdf">
Grid whitepaper</a> and copies of the recent <a href="http://www.artima.com/lejava/articles/jinilicensing.html">
licensing interview from Artima</a>. It was, of course, great seeing all the familiar faces
from the Jini Community and engaging in some intresting discussions. As always seems
the case :-) -- the place was empty at the end of the night, and we still had
about 10 or so members of our Jini Community hanging out. Our community rocks! :-)
<P>
We've got a number of great sessions to come, and we're also planning an informal
get together tonight, 6:30pm at the <a href="http://thirstybear.com">Thirsty
Bear</a>, so if you can make it -- come on by.
