<P>
This month's Design Corner column continues the introductory series by
Phil Bishop (<a href="http://www.incax.com">Inca X</a>). Nigel Warren joins
him in authoring <b>"Jini Technology Introduction, Part Three"</b>. The article
focuses on JavaSpaces technology.
<P>
Here is an excerpt:
<p>
<blockquote>
<i>
The main thing to remember is that if a class is a type of <code>Entry</code> (implements the
<code>net.jini.core.entry.Entry</code> interface) then <code>public</code> fields are intended to be
stored and matched in the JavaSpace, that is, they become the equivalent of key fields.
An unhappy side effect of using the keyword <code>public</code> to mean matchable and storeable is
that it also still means 'give any other Java object public access to this field while
the <code>Entry</code> object is active within this JVM'. This can produce a degree of tension in
the design forces applying to the 'duality of use' of entries.
</i>

of Jini Technology Starter Kit services (reggie, maholo, outrigger, etc), and
a configurable RMI runtime using either JRMP, JERI, or JERI/JSSE.

Clustering J2EE with Jini</a></h3>
<P><b>A Conversation with Sean Neville, Part 1 (by Bill Venners)</b>
<P><i>So then I started playing with Jini again. I ripped out our discovery
mechanism, and in its place I established a Jini lookup service that we used
as a delegate inside a service I dubbed the "cluster manager."
<br><br>
When you fire up the JRun server, you're firing up the service microkernel
that starts a list of services. These services can be nested. If a particular
service starts, then all its child services start before you move on to the
next service in the hierarchy. Services can be represented in an XML structure,
and that is a handy way to conceptualize it: starting services is like going
through a DOM (document object model) where each element represents a service.
Each service has a lifecycle; so you go through the tree once, and you initialize
all the services and their children. Then you go through the tree again, and
you actually start all the services. That lifecycle lets us handle some
interdependencies between services.
