FWIW: I wasn't really trying to improve on anything.  Instead I was
focusing on motivations and effects in an attempt to aid understanding.

So, I'm not sure I'd be pushing for the spec to change - feels like a
throway, JavaDoc'ish type of thing to me.  Or maybe we need to revisit
this whole spec and annotation of the spec (I'm thinking the equivalent
of pencil scribblings in the margin of a book).

And given that I already understood what was there and was comfortable
with it, I'm not a good candidate for qualifying how "minor" this is :)
