Re: Apache Proposal submitted!

One thing we have left hanging from previous discussions
that needs to be closed is:
  * the web home for, and management of the specifications

This possibly has an effect on the naming of the Apache project
("Jini" or other), and with the issue still being open, we
decided to move forward with the proposal to Apache with the
Jini name in the interim.

To sum up where I think we are with the specs decision...
if the specs were to live separate from the Apache project,
there is still some question on where (although that seems like
it could be easily figured out) they'd live, but the main question
seems to be how they would be managed.

We have the Jini Community Decision Process (JDP), which is the
current way the specs are managed, which would need to be updated.
We'd also need to identify a lead to manage the process.
I'm not in a position to make any additional committments from Sun to
do that work. I'm personally looking forward to being involved with
the Apache project, helping the work at the 'new' Jini.org, and
assisting GreggW when needed with the Java.net Jini Community area -
but won't have the cycles required to manage the JDP or some
other process properly.

I still view the 'specs as part of the Apache project' option as
a good and viable choice. The Community will still have a strong
influence in what happens with the specs (through the project discussion
alias, etc), and for those who want to get involved in a bigger way,
the opportunity to become a committer is always there.

Based on that background information - we're currently leaning
on having the specs as part of the Apache project.
