Hi all- Just wanted to provide a short update (sorry, it's been a while) on what's happening with the JiniProposal to Apache. We initially made the Proposal to the Apache incubator project back in June. The initial email and thread of discussion at Apache can be viewed from: <http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-general/ 200606.mbox/%[email protected]%3e> We then hit a time lag, caused by summer holidays and some indecision on whether "Jini" was the right name for the proposed project. There was some consultation with Sun trademark folks regarding the trademark questions on this, and then the initial committers eventually came to agreement to continue pursuing the "Jini" name with Apache, if possible. Discussion started again in the Apache incubator last week, and two threads of discussion have developed, which can be found at: <http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-general/ 200608.mbox/%[email protected]%3e> and <http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-general/ 200608.mbox/%[email protected]%3e>. You can also find the Jini Apache Proposal on their wiki at: <http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/JiniProposal> There are updates needed (now that Jini.org has changed), but so far the only changes from the initial Proposal is the addition of two new mentors. :-) As for the threads of discussion/debate on the Apache incubator list... there seems to be some support within the Apache incubator of using the Jini name, and some dissension that "Jini" is not an appropriate name for something which has a greater span than an implementation. There also is question/ debate on how the specifications fit in (are they part of the "Jini "Apache project and managed via the same processes as the code, or are they a different beast with a separate management process). Regardless of these questions, there looks to be strong mutual interest (Apache and our Community) in the project, so I'm fully expecting a successful next step soon. Please post any questions or comments you have. thanks! -Jim =========================================================================== To unsubscribe, send email to [email protected] and include in the body of the message "signoff JAVASPACES-USERS".
