Hi all-

A small group on the '[email protected]' alias
has been making progress over the last couple weeks
discussing new name possibilities for our Apache proposal.
We're trying to get the name decided by tomorrow so we
can move forward in the Apache incubator process.

Right now it looks like the name "river" (which also had
good support during our first poll) is leading the pack, with
a bunch of other names gathering good support as well.

Before we get too far I wanted to let ya'll know where
we're headed and gather your input. Please send
mail to me or the '[email protected]' alias if
you have strong objections or opinions. (Hey - I'm still
thinking about our last experience, when someone
commented:
   "If you want people to come up with project names, just
    asking them doesn't work. Threatening to call the project
    braintree does. :o)")

Well... consider this threatening you to call the project
"river".   ;-)

Thanks.

-Jim

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Latest polling of the apache-proj-name group has led
to the following prioritized list of name choices. "river"
is currently the preferred name by a pretty wide margin.

* river
* constellation
* damask
* tonic
* parana
* shaman
* jinius
* fabric
* solomon
* madrigal
* mantas
* codeinmotion
* maneuver
* avalanche
* resurjini
* jazz
---------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to Kúti Zsolt for maintaining the 'master list' of
entries and discussion on the list. Here is Kúti's full list
as background:

First round attempts:
-  river
-  bodega
- codeinmotion
- constellation, freejack, jackalope
- kuiper: (This is not a well known cartoon character, at least
I've never ever heard of it (neither has Wikipedia or Google).
Kuiper was an astronomer influenced the notion of the "Kuiper
belt". The "Kuiper belt" is a batch of small objects outside of
Neptune's orbit, where a lot of comets come from.)
- biere, peace, red99, cloudscape
- jazmin, jane, genio, particles, jiniache,
      djs, hydra, ubi, swami, iguana

Second round:

- Sulayman, Süleyman, Sulaiman, Suleyman or Suleiman
   (Arabic for Soloman, the Koran says he commanded the
   Jinn to work for him)
- ghul, sila, afrit, marid, jinniyah or jiniyah (a female jinn)
- djini djinni (types of jinn)
- MagicLamp
- MagicCarpet
-. WishingWell
- Solomon (as in King Solomon)
- Oversoul or Overmind (Oversoul was a term coined by
   Ralph Waldo Emerson to refer to a collective soul that
   everyone shares, a "common heart". I think that somewhat
   jives with the way different processes and machines commune
   through jini.)
- Fabric
- Connection or Connections
- Affinity
- Jeme (as in java meme but with the same vowel consonant
structure as jini)
- Snowflake
- Avalanche
- Catalyst (Jini acts as a catalyst to allow us to accomplish the
hard work of distributed computing)
- Chinook (as in a species of salmon. Salmon are known for
swimming upstream to spawn. Reminds me of Jini going
against the mainstream)
- Finesse (handle a situation with skill and adroitness)
- Maneuver (employ clever schemes to achieve an end)
- Pagoda * (this would have a cool logo)
- Regency *
- Marcato *
- Shaman (meaning Genie, Wizard, Magician)
- SOA (that's a bold one!!)
- Alehouse or Ale House (it gives an image of all the different
people in there interacting with each other in various
capacities. Besides, we've had Jini community meetings in
places like that.)
- Freedom (In the end, it's all about the choices you can make
to design your system. Jini provides a lot of freedom in that
design and helps to free one of many different restrictions that
are driving wedges between technologies and systems.)
- Mantas or Mantis (precursor to Semantas or Semantis)
- Madrigal[+] (type of vocal chamber music designed for 2-9
singers, each with their own part; variable number of
participants, but at least two)
- Cadenza[+] (seems to mean the part of a performance
where the soloist "shows off")
- Tonic[+] (keynote of the scale in which a composition is
written; also has some medicinal connotations (eg. something
that will fix you up or solve problems) as well as a
"secretingredient"; a next version could Supertonic)
- Wonderland
- Jazz (has a nice ring to it and not difficult to think of a
logo either)
- Rubicon
- Tigershark
- Tory
- Damask (a type of elaborately woven fabric native to the
mid-east. So we get both the Arabian association and the fabric
imagery in one fell swoop! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damask)
- Topsight
- EmerJini
- ResurJini
- inij ()

[*] In the spirit of that the Apache projects have names that have
nothing to do with the tech involved.

[+]... we used music terminology as a source for inspiration. I
like this for jini as well because alot of SOA is in the
orchestration or various individual actors. Here are some I
pulled out, more or less by randomly opening a music book
to various pages and looking for things that jumped out. All
easy to say and remember.

Names in doubt (not exhaustive list):

- MESH:  Trademark Serial #73011272 - Computerized
storage and retrieval services for biomedical literature,
so that's out.
- River: There are a lot of things like "Blue River", "Red
River", "Moon River" which are all software companies.
"River" itself might pass the "lawyer test".
- Sirocco:  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sirocco,
connected to Arabia) Trademark Serial #75924270 - Audio
equipment for computers, so that's out.
- Finesse: Trademark Serial #78688908 - Computer hardware
and computer software used for designing, implementing,
operating, managing, controlling, using, optimizing and/or
evaluating DSL systems; that's one is out. )
- Jini4J and JiniUs: (Jini + us, the community)
(http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=ub8n5c.2.1,
but Trademark office lists it as "dead" )
Has the same trademark issue as "Jini"; they might have
problems similar to what's going on with Apple pursuing
anything named "pod" in it's name. (See the URL:
http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2164984/apple-goes-pod-makers
for more info on that).
- Xanadu:  http://xanadu.com/ that's a registered trademark
already for Hypertext.
- Aladin: nixed due to copyright/trademark concerns
- Djinn: nixed due to copyright/trademark concerns
- Braintree nixed due to copyright/trademark/place name
concerns and sweeping unpopularity

Generic thougths:

- "We recently went through a project naming exercise and one
thing we concluded was that a proper name was better than a
descriptive name; that is, products in our market with proper
names tended to be well known and recognizable while products
with descriptive names tended to stand out less and/or be
misunderstood. In that light I propose some proper names..."

- "I think having this go into the Apache incubator and then
progress to a full-fledged Apache project will eliminate
a lot of the "worry" about it. But [...] I think that if the
new project name we came up with didn't have anything to
do with Jini at all we can avoid these knee-jerk reactions to
just hearing the name.

I know people that just hear the word "Jini" and completely
dismiss it, even though they don't have a clue about how it
actually works. And that's despite having seen projects
that have successfully used it. I would hate to have that
carry over to the Apache Incubator. It needs the truly
fresh start that it deserves."
