Re: JavaOne 08 CFP

Hmmmm,

So as an external reviewer on the cool stuff topic for last year and
this year I want to say a couple of things:

(1)  There's actually some pretty stiff competition out there and only
so many slots to aim at.

(2)  There's a bit of a problem with the topics as other than cool stuff
it can be difficult to find another track suitable for such talks.  I've
raised this with the relevant people.

(3)  Jini itself is seen as "old" these days (and not without some
justification) what's needed is some new and exciting usage - the same
old master/worker stuff really won't cut it.

(4)  There are some specific rules around not accepting talks that are
essentially vendor pitches, so beware how much you discuss a particular
product.

In summary Jini talks tend to compete in the cool stuff topic with a
whole lot of other stuff and thus only so many talks will get through.
We can't go turning the cool stuff track into a Jini track much as we
might wish, there need to be some new tactics.

Maybe pick another track ideally (perhaps because the vertical you're in
merits it) and preferably mention Jini only a little unless you've done
something super clever with it as part of your efforts.  This isn't as
bad as it seems, if people see a lot of verticals who say "we use Jini"
it'll have good potential to generate some interest (remember all those
questions about "where are the real-world uses"?)
