Scripts and lookup groups

The startup scripts in bodega support different protocols. Each protocol-specific script hard codes the lookup group names for that protocol. The names are several layers down, script-wise. But for various purposes (dev, integration test, and "live demo from a wiki") I'd like to be able to start up services for any of those purposes each with their own lookup group, so they do not collide. Is that a reasonable thing to want, jini-wise? I thought lookup group distinction should be a fairly agile mechanism, but maybe I am missing the point of hard-to-change, hard-coded group names. Is there a reasonable way to achieve this, short of copying each layer of scripts for each hard-coded group, and short of rewriting everything to be parameterized? i.e. am I missing something relatively easy?
