For the first release as an apache project, I have to agree with this approach 
100%. Let's make the transition to using River as painless as possible, then 
evolve the technology to suit the community (of participants). 

I also agree with Mark's comment about open discussions. If someone doesn't 
want to share their PoV with the rest, then how can we react - either to 
agree or disagree - and reach a mutually beneficial understanding.
