The culprit seemed to be my Parallels installation. Paralles sets up
some device drivers that were hosing my local hostname resolution. I
removed Parallels (had to reboot) and all is well. A side note, if you
are using Parallels, make sure you upgrade to 3.0 build 5160. I tried
launching an earlier version (had to start it to uninstall it) and
Parallels crashed.
