There is also no problem with people just participating just for the
intellectual challenge, so there is no need to even have a business
objective for it ;-)

It requires you to create an account at the JIRA issue tracking system 
at Apache and then you can enter an issue against the Apache River 
project http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/RIVER

Details of the issues involved can be found in a presentation I gave at
JCM10 in Brussels, see http://www.cheiron.org/misc/jcm/jcm10.pdf . The
problem space is known and the solutions as well, probably it takes some
time to iron out the details but I have good hopes that many parts can
be tackled in a reasonable short timespan.
