If you do a google search on the phrase, "Java intelligent network infrastructure", it comes up with 563 results, one of which is Wikipedia. Wikipedia says that, 'JINI originally stood for Java Intelligent Network Infrastructure, but it is now known simply as "Jini".' I can see why many people think Jini stands for something. Perhaps at some point someone got Jini confused with JAIN - Java Advanced Intelligent Network (An API/Architecture for telephony). People like initials to stand for something, and will keep on using them even if they are untrue (such as Simple Object AP).
