Yes. Or to put it differently: The cost of hardware acceleration (hardware and addt'l software support) is non-null and non-negligible while the cost of software acceleration (a bit more dynamic memory) is becoming increasingly negligible. So if software acceleration is "good enough" (which it seems to be for most application scenarios on newer devices) hardware acceleration just doesn't seem very attractive.
