Well as with everything mobile there is a US standard then there is the rest of the world. :)

While there are some other Global Nav systems, the GPS system used around the world is the US GPS system.

What they may be referring to as it not working in the US is that the European firmware may have maps for the UK and not the US.   This is only a problem if you use a built in apps, while something like google maps may work fine.

The other issue may be that if this is the W760i (as in International which is usually what is sold in the UK) you are missing a frequency band, and this can cause issues for AGPS (Assisted GPS). 

In looking at the reviews I see nothing that says it would be incompatible.... however I have seen some saying that O2 did not include the GPS apps, and I do not know if they disabled apps from seeing GPS.  You may want to confirm this is an originally unlocked device and not one that was unlocked after market.
