how to make java archives through java code

Hello,
I want to copy directory to server from client through java
rmi so I will make archive(single file) of that directory and copy
that file to server.
But I am cofused about making archive of directory. Shall i use jar or
war or any other archive to make single file.
If I used jar then how should i code it in java program.
please help me anyone have code to make jar..
