I would be looking for lots of things actually:

(a) an SPI architecture
(b) the JERI stuff in the JDK
(c) Make DGC optional
(d) a non-broken solution to RMI/SSL over JRMP
(e) a better solution to java.rmi.server.hostname
(f) configurable timeouts in the API, preferably per stub

Is there something in particular that you are looking for that Jini 2.x (or
the 
Apache podling, River) doesn't already provide?
