You can use a tool called Nagios. We had used it in one of our projects. You
install it and it will notify through email if any of your registered
services is down.

Subject: Tomcat monitoring

Hi,

Does anyone know of any monitoring software for detecting when a tomcat
instance becomes unavailable and notifying support persons via email/page?
Something open source, preferably.

TIA.
