isDebugEnabled - log4j

Is there any possibility to set or change programmatically what seems to be org.apache.log4j.Logger's read-only property: debugEnabled?
You can only ask for its value through isDebugEnable().
Is it possible they didn't think about a getter method?
Please, help me.
