web.xml <error-page>

In my servlet application, I am configuring my web.xml file with the
following error pages:

    <error-page>
        <error-code>500</error-code>
        <location>/general_error.html</location>
    </error-page>
    <error-page>
        <error-code>404</error-code>
        <location>/general_error.html</location>
    </error-page>

This works great for 404 errors. But NullPointerExceptions thrown from the
servlet, return a 500, but do not display the error page.

Any good explanation for this?

Jay
