Yes, assuming a distributed application communicates data over sockets.
This data is typically encrypted by the application before it is sent
over the socket and decrypted when it is received on the other end of
the socket (end to end security, application level security).

Typically that data packets travel over different network segments,
Ethernet, Wavelan, cellular network. The latter two might use additional
protection when transmitting that data, without the application
"knowing" anything about it.
