Your question seems to be very general, for many people to take a stab at
it.

Anyway, one thing about XML that can be considered a problem is the speed.
A general framework such as XML  can never be as fast as a custom protocol
to embed (marshall/unmarshall) data that can be written for the custom
application.  This is the price to be paid for using off the shelf parsers
and marshallers versus writing custom parser/marshallers for your custom
needs.

This is mostly the biggest selling point of XML, but looking at just the
speed, this can be considered a problem.
