I did never run TN5250 as a Applet but it sounds you need to set up a
java.policy file (see http://tn5250j.sourceforge.net/SSLinstructions.html)

If you want a replacement for tn5250 why don't you run TN5250J as a
standalone application (java -jar tn5250j.jar)?
