Try 'xhost+ localhost' (should return no errors), then 'export DISPLAY=localhost:0', then try to run some gtk app (eg. gedit), then start a swing application. Everything from the same terminal, without using 'su', 'sudo', 'ssh' etc. in *between* these commands. Did you try more than one Swing application? NB. I don't quite believe that '-nolisten tcp' is the problem. My X server is launched with that option and I have no problems.
