I'm not quite sure what is meant by "The 0-size memory allocation workaround should not be needed.  
If we allocate 0-size memory anywhere, it's a bug that should be fixed."

Would it be possible for user-written java code to cause a zero-size allocation?

If we want to diagnose any occurrence  the probably we should have the workaround-routine show a 
stack trace if there's ever a request for zero size.
