Actually, almost any change to compile options can break the inline engine. 
That's the nature of the inlined engine.  So, I do not consider this a bug.

Maybe one could add some check to detect any user-provided CFLAGS setting and
abort the build, then issue an error message.

I am degrading this bug to wishlist-status.
