I was using just 'make' but 'gmake' seems to fair no better.  It way
however more informative.  'gmake' seems to be telling me the 'jikes'
doesn't like to be called with '+Pno-shadow'

here is some of what I get, after typing 'gmake:'

    Making all in lib
      ...
    Adding java source files from srcdir '..'.
    /usr/local/bin/jikes -q +Pno-shadow +F -bootclasspath '' 
-extdirs '' -sourcepath
     '' --classpath 
..:..vm/reference:../external/w3c_dom:../external/sax:.: -d . @
    classes
    Error: "no-shadow" is not a recongnized flag for controlling 
pedantic warnings.
      ...
    gmake: *** [all-recusive] Error 1
