I highly recommend that you seek counsel from a lawyer, if you want a
professional opinion.  I am personally not interested in seeing legal
discussion threads on hypothetical problems on this mailing list.

To answer very shortly your question (and close this discussion thread),
I would say that both statements are not contradictory.  Gross
simplification: 1- GNU Classpath's license says "we allow you to use
whatever license you want for vm and application". 2- the GPL says: "if
you link a GPL vm, the whole resulting work must be under the GPL".  So,
(1-) says that you can link classpath with GPL vm, and (2-) says, if vm
is GPL, then vm + classlib must be GPL.  There's no contradiction.
Remember: this is a gross simplification used to illustrate the matter
to you.  If you want more clarification, please seek a professional
legal opinion.

Hoping you will now join the fun, and contribute to SableVM and/or GNU
Classpath, and forget about boring legal issues. :-)
